Parks aren't parks without help, and Governors Island is no exception. There are plenty of ways to get involved, and spend some quality time on the Island, too.
GIPEC has a need for greeters at the Battery Maritime Building and on the island who can help visitors with directions and information about what to do, see and hear, can tell them where to find food and restrooms, and will lend a hand wherever useful. There may also be openings for your special passions - for instance, backstage in the Green Room at Folks concerts, managing miniature golf or assembling kites.
The Alliance also enlists volunteer help on Island and off. Our Welcome Tent at the crest of the hill has to be staffed every weekend, introducing visitors to the Alliance and its mission. We also use volunteers at special events, such as the Grand Opening of Water Taxi Beach last week and planting day at the new Added Value Farm on Picnic Point.
There is an application form on GIPEC's Get Involved webpage. Last year there were about 20 volunteers, but the sky's the limit. The greatest need is on weekends. To learn more about volunteering with the Alliance, email Elizabeth or call 917-546-4304.
