Brooklyn Ferries, To and Fro

Flood-tide below me! I see you face to face!
Clouds of the west--sun there half an hour high--I see you also face to face.

     Walt Whitman, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry

There are far fewer ferries criss-crossing the harbor now than in Walt Whitman's day, and until now there have been none connecting the 400 yards between Brooklyn and the Island. More than one-quarter of last year's visitors to the Island came from Brooklyn, and they all had to come via Manhattan. This summer, for the first time, two services will offer direct crossings - GIPEC's free rides on NY Waterway ferries from the Fulton Ferry landing on Saturdays when there is a scheduled event on the Island, and New York Water Taxi's supplementary service for events at the Water Taxi Beach.

Neither one has a regular schedule, so Brooklynites must check the ferries' websites to find out when and if: www.govisland.com and www.nywatertaxi.com. The GIPEC service will operate this coming Saturday, June 27, every 20 minutes starting at 11 o'clock. Water Taxi service doesn't start until the beach opens in July.
