FDNY's recent move to close the Governors Island Fire House has caused an uproar in the community. Although we appreciate the need to spend less given the current economic situation, the Alliance strongly objects to this decision, especially just as the Island is becoming a vital piece of Lower Manhattan. The Fire Department will save $8.9 million by closing the GI fire house, as well as reducing service in four other locations throughout Lower Manhattan. Read the editorial by Downtown Express.
